TEHRAN -- The individual who provided Saeed Emami with depilatory powder has been arrested. Talking to the TEHRAN TIMES, an informed source said, "Emami had been under special surveillance in jail. This was why he had not succeeded in his two previous attempts to commit suicide. However, it is hard to imagine that a detainee may commit suicide by drinking a hair-removing solution." "The individual who provided Emami with the depilatory powder has been arrested, and he will be interrogated to find out if there was any plan to kill Emami to wipe out the evidence," he added.
Saeed Emami committed suicide by drinking a depilatory solution while in the public bath of a Tehran prison on Saturday, military Prosecutor Mohammad Niazi said. Emami was the mastermind behind the last year's string of murders. He was a rogue intelligence officer and served as deputy minister for eight years. Nationalist dissident Dariush Foruhar, his wife, Parvaneh, and three writers -- Mohammad Mokhtari, Mohammad Pouyandeh and Majid Sharif -- were murdered late last year.
The Information Minister Ali Yunesi said Monday the investigations will continue and the suicide of Emami will not hinder the process of investigations. Niazi described Emami as "one of the main agents" behind the murders which shocked the public last year and said he had confessed to taking part in the killings. "In view of the documents available and his confessions, Emami would have been sentenced to death if he had stood trial with regard to the charges," Niazi said.
Niazi identified three other people detained in connection with the series of murders and said the motive for the killings was to create problems for the government on the "international and local scenes." He named four of the "main agents" as Mostafa Kazemi, Mehrdad Alikhani, Khosro Barati he and said that another 23 people had been charged in connection with the case.
The Information Minister Qorbanali Dorri-Najafabadi resigned in February when it was revealed that rogue elements of his ministry were behind the killings.
